The Bombay High Court stated that the Maharashtra government has the responsibility of equipping special online education to disabled children in the state.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Dipankar Dutta and Justice G. S. Kulkarni said that Doordarshan could be a useful tool to provide education to the disabled.

The bench was hearing a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) filed by NGO Anamapreem, which expressed its concerns over difficulties faced by the disabled children amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Udaya Varunjikar, the advocate for the petitioner, submitted that problems like lack of staff or unavailability of mobile facilities are things of a hindrance for the differently-abled students, who are unable to seek education.

The petitioner suggested the use of local channels and radio to educate the students.

Justice Dutta told the government to come up with a solution as “It is the responsibility of the state government.”

The bench further said, “You can take one- or two-hour slots on Doordarshan and show special learning programs.”

The court has asked the government to ponder over the suggestions put forth by the petitioner and submit a detailed report by January 18.
