Assam government is set to bring a new act in which the bride and groom will be bound to declare their religion and income in their official documents before their marriage.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister of Health and Family Welfare, has done the announcement.

He further said that the act endeavors to empower women of the state.

He further cleared that the intended law was not entirely similar to ‘anti-love jihad’ laws.

The proposed law will not only include disclosing religion, but also details like income, education, family details, etc.

Sarma said, “Many a times even in same religion marriage we have found that the girl later finds that the husband leads an illegal business.”

He further stated that the man and the woman would be legally bound to submit all the information as prescribed by the government a month before.

The minister has hinted that the law will have some elements similar to the ‘love jihad’ laws in UP and MP.
