Attorney General K K Venugopal refused to initiate criminal contempt of court proceedings against former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi over his remarks over judiciary during a event.

Activist Saket Gokhale in his petition referred to remarks made by the Rajya Sabha MP at an event organised by the India Today group on Feb 12 and said the remarks tend to scandalise the judiciary.

Former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi in a media event said,“You want a 5 trillion dollar economy but you have a ramshackled judiciary,”

“If you were to go to court, you would only be washing your dirty linen in court. You won’t get a verdict. I have no hesitation in saying it,” said former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, adding that “only corporations willing to take chances with their millions of rupees go to Supreme Court”.

RTI Activist Saket Gokhale had written to the AG asking him to initiate contempt proceedings against Gogoi for his scandalous remarks against the top court and attempting to lower its dignity.
