AFSPA: Centre declares Nagaland “Disturbed Area” for six months

A notification released by the government has stated that the entire Nagaland is “disturbed” that the “use of armed forces in aid of the civil power is necessary.”

The central government has declared this under the Armed Forces (Special Power) Act, 1958 (AFSPA).

The notification – by the Ministry of Home Affairs stated that the state of the entire Nagaland is such that it is necessary to use the armed forces.

The period for the charges is six months which will come into effect from December 30, 2020, onwards.

The notification stated:

“Therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (No 28 of 1958) the Central government hereby declares that whole of the State of Nagaland to be ‘disturbed area’ for a period of six months with effect from 30th December, 2020 for the purpose of the said Act.”

The AFSPA is in force in Jammu and Kashmir since 1990. It is passed to maintain peace and order in “disturbed areas.”
