Twitter has issued a threat of legal action against Meta, the parent company of Facebook, over its newly launched text-based app called Threads. The app has gained millions of users within a week, posing as a competitor to Elon Musk’s Twitter.
In a letter addressed to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter’s attorney, Alex Spiro, accused Meta of unlawfully utilizing Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property by hiring former Twitter employees to develop a “copycat” app. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone responded to the allegations, stating that none of the engineers on the Threads team were former Twitter employees.
According to a report by news website Semafor, Spiro’s letter indicated Twitter’s intention to rigorously protect its intellectual property rights and mentioned the company’s right to pursue civil remedies or seek a court injunction. The letter served as a formal notice for Meta to preserve any relevant documents that could be involved in a potential dispute between the two companies.
In response to a tweet discussing the possibility of legal action against Meta, Elon Musk commented, “Competition is fine, cheating is not.”
