In the backdrop of the conflict going on between Russia and Ukraine, a Lawyer approached the Supreme Court seeking directions to protect thousands of Indian students and families stranded in Ukraine.

Advocate Vishal Tiwari filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and sought directions to the Union of India to take immediate and effective diplomatic measures for escalation of stranded Indian citizens in Ukraine.

He further sought to direct the Centre to ensure medical facilities, housing and lodging facilities, and food supply to the stranded Indian citizens in Ukraine.

The Plea sought directions to the Centre to ensure that the MBBS degree of the Indian students who studied from Ukraine through online mode shall also be recognized so that Medical students do not lose their career.

It was stated that there is chaos in the city of Kyiv in Ukraine. The Indian students trapped there fear that war may take place and there is no way to return home.

The Plea stated that it is the responsibility of the Government to protect the life and liberty of its Citizens not only in India but also in foreign countries under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.

It further stated that the Government shall protect the citizens especially when they are helpless and there is no mode of transport. It shall also adopt diplomatic measures to deal with the situation.
