Nirav Modi had appeared today before the Westminister Court via videolink for a routine 28-day remand hearing, and his custody has been extended till 7th January to conclude the hearing in the extradition case.

Nirav Modi is ‘wanted’ in India with connection to the $2 billion Punjab National Bank scam case. He is at Wandsworth Prison in south-west London since his arrest following India’s extradition policy.

On November 3, Judge Goozee ruled to establish a prima facie case of fraud and money laundering against Nirav Modi after hearing the arguments for and against witness statements admissibility given by the Central Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement Directorate.

District Judge Samuel Goozee will hear the closing arguments from both sides on January 7 and 8, 2021, and would give a final judgment.

Criminal proceedings going against Nirav Modi:

  • CBI case for fraud upon PNB by obtaining fraudulent ‘Letters of Understanding.’
  • Enforcement Directorate case relating to the laundering of the fraud proceeds.
  • Additional charges added to the CBI case of causing the disappearance of evidence and criminal intimidation.

The court has also been told about the conspiracy of the PNB staff with Modi to issue LoUs to his company, which were issued without a credit check, recording of the issuance, and also without charging the commission for the transaction.

One of his defence stated LoUs being a standard practice.

He has been in prison on an extradition warrant executed by Scotland Yard since March 19, 2019, his bail attempts being repeatedly turned down.
