Myanmar police have filed charges against ex- de facto leader of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi for allegedly illegally importing communications equipment and is under such to be kept under detention until 15th February.
A coup on Monday sealed the fate of the country after a period of tense atmosphere in Myanmar. The Military had already stated that the election results, in which they lost by a landslide to Aung San Suu Kyi, were fraudulent.
This leads up to Monday morning when prominent leaders started getting arrested as the military successfully took back control after almost 10 years, as they last had control of the country back in 2011.
Suu kyi had earlier been placed under 15 years of house arrest between 1989 and 2010 when she led the democratic movement for Myanmar, and while her international image took a dig during the Rohingya crisis, she remains largely popular in her homeland as “the lady”.
Her party the NLD (National League for Democracy) has stated that their offices have been raided and their prominent leaders arrested after their landslide victory on November 8th 2020.
Despite the electoral commission stating their was no fraud, the army chief, Min Aung Hlaing has seized power and the country’s president Win Myint has been put under detention the same as Suu Kyi.
G7 has condemned the coup.
