A Pakistani court said that India’s cooperation is essential to implement the ICJ’s verdict in the death-row prisoner Kulbhushan Jadhav’s case.

A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Athar Minallah, Justice Aamer Farooq, and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb heard the petition.

The petition was filed by the law ministry to seek an appointment of a lawyer for Jadhav in filing a plea review against his death sentence.

Kulbhushan Jadhav, 50, a retired Indian Navy officer, was arrested under the charges of terrorism and espionage in 2017.

Earlier, Pakistan had refused to appoint an Indian lawyer or Queen’s counsel for Jadhav.

However, the ICJ based in Hague ruled that consular access should be granted to India and Pakistan must take an effective consideration in the conviction of Jadhav.

Anurag Srivastava, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, had said, “The core issues need to be addressed if we have to have effective review and reconsideration as ordered by the international court of justice. Pakistan must show its intention to deliver on the core issues,”
