Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh was accused by three men of extortion. The three men, including a cricket bookie, have filed separate cases against the accused with the Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP).
An official said that, in April, Sonu Jalan (the cricket bookie), along with two businessmen Ketan Tanna and Noor Ahmed Pathan, filed their complaints to the DGP Sanjay Pandey.
They have also forwarded copies of the complaints to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil.
Jalan, in his complaint, stated that, in 2018 when Singh headed the Thane Police, he had called on the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against Jalan in a case and henceforth, extorted money from him.
Jalan had also mentioned in his complaint, former encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma and two other officers, all of whom were posted at the Thane Police’s Anti-Extortion Cell at that time.
